LAST OF 2010, FIRST OF 2011

A reminder that our final event of 2010 takes place this Thursday :  the Glasgow launch of the new magazine Causeway / Cabhsair – as part of an evening which will also include the Scottish Writers’ Centre’s Mid-Winter Celebration. Helen Lynch, Donal McLaughlin, Niall O’Gallagher, Wayne Price and Maggie Rabatski will read work from Issues 1 and 2 of this exciting new literary magazine. Following the reading, from about 8.15, there will be mulled wine, mince pies & music  – courtesy of the Scottish Writers’ Centre as a thank you for all your support in 2010. The Arches Community Choir and Graham Campbell will perform.

2011 will see us move on to fortnightly events. In addition to our monthly readings / workshops, a new writers’ group – a discussion group, open to all – will meet each month.  Led by a different writer each time, the group will discuss different aspects of different types of writing. The idea is that that writer in question will present some initial thoughts for 5-10 minutes, max – and that the Group will then proceed to discuss the issue. Join us on 6 January for the first session – on autobiographical writing. Full details below. Other topics currently being considered are: script writing, song writing, story telling and translation. Group members will (of course) be encouraged to add their own suggestions! – Simply come along on 6 January, then aim to re-join us each month!

We are pleased to present, in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen, the Glasgow launch of this new literary magazine which focuses on Irish and Scottish writing. Work is published in the different languages of Scotland and Ireland. The inaugural issue appeared in May 2010 – and the second issue has just come out. Join Helen Lynch, Donal McLaughlin, Niall O’Gallagher, Wayne Price and Maggie Rabatski to hear work published in the first two issues. Perhaps you’ll want to submit work in future? – The Scottish Writers’ Centre’s Mid-Winter Celebration will round off the evening.

An Allergic Reaction to Autobiography?

Donal McLaughlin

Author and translator, Donal McLaughlin (an allergic reaction to national anthems & other stories) will introduce our first discussion. Donal’s debut collection – longlisted for the Frank O’Connor Short Story Award and nominated for the EIBF Readers’ Best First Book Award – includes eleven Liam O’Donnell stories, the “model” for which was a sequence of “autobiographical” Franz Kien stories by German writer Alfred Andersch (1914-1980). Join Donal to hear why he reckons “autobiographical” need not mean “about me”. And to discuss the dangers, pitfalls, attractions, and possibilities of the A-word.
