Many thanks to Carol McKay for her fiction-writing workshop on 27 May. Word has reached this blogger – first in Zurich and then in Berlin – that the workshop was well attended; that participants expressed the wish for more such workshops to be held; and that a verdict of ‘that was brilliant!’ was passed at the end of the night.  Some of the short-short stories produced that evening / finished subsequently may appear on this Blog in due course – together with the exercise set by Carol. Your faithful blogger looks forward to reading them! And hopes to be in town for the next such workshop!

Details of the next SWC event – Switzerland Revisited at 7pm on Thursday 10 June – are reproduced below for ease of reference. Jeannette Hunziker arrived in Glasgow two days ago, will be around until 21 July,  and looks forward to meeting fellow writers. Glasgow – in glorious sunshine – has already been making a very good impression.

One other date for your diaries – not a Writers’ Centre event, but one which has had a lot of moral support from us: on 18 June, again at the CCA but at the earlier time of 5.30pm, Scottish PEN will hold an event entitled Crossing Language Barriers to mark Refugee Week – with writers Iyad Hayatleh and Kusay Hussein appearing with Tessa Ransford and Sue Reid Sexton, respectively, who have been helping them to produce English-language versions of their work. Donal McLaughlin will chair. Full details on both the CCA and Scottish PEN websites.

But first, next week:

Thursday, 10 June 2010, 7-8.30pm

CCA, Sauchiehall St, Glasgow

Admission Free

Jeannette Hunziker

Donal McLaughlin

Since 2004, a literary exchange has existed between Scotland and Switzerland, initially between the cities of Glasgow and Berne – a project first brought to Glasgow by poet David Kinloch, Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde. In the past, Donal McLaughlin, Donny O’Rourke and Rody Gorman have represented Scotland in Berne, while Pedro Lenz, Sandra Kuenzi and Simon Hari have enjoyed residencies in Glasgow. Jeannette Hunziker is one of four Swiss writers who will spend a total of five months in Glasgow from early June. Peter Kamber, Wolfgang Bortlik and Maurizio Pinarello will follow in August, September and October, respectively.

At our June event, Jeannette – a recent graduate of the Schweizerisches Literaturinstitut in Biel, famous for its Creative Writing programme – will read from her own fiction as well as helping translator Donal McLaughlin to present other Swiss writers included in New Swiss Writing, the third volume of which has just been published. Donal has translated almost 80 writers to date – Jeannette, Peter, Wolfgang and Maurizio included – for these anthologies.

Another evening marked by great variety is assured. Do come along and welcome Jeannette to Scotland as she prepares to spend two months here!

The event will finish by 8.30pm – but discussions can continue in the bar.

The Scottish Writers’ Centre is grateful to the CCA and to Culture & Sport Glasgow for their generous support of its work.

For this event, we also have the kind support of Reto Renggli and the Consulate General of Switzerland in Edinburgh.

We return to the Club Room on Level 2 of the CCA for this event.
