After a survey in 2007 showed enthusiasm among Scottish writers for the project, a small group came together to explore with Culture & Sport, Glasgow and other potential partners what scope might exist for the creation of a centre with a physical base.

A limited company was established late in 2008 to provide a base for the development of the Scottish Writers’ Centre. Charity status was secured in the autumn of 2009. The Steering Group currently includes: Gerrie Fellows, Gerry Loose, Donal McLaughlin and Rachel Clive.
